Energy Tower
The wind energy tower on the old sintering site helps to improve the water quality of the Old Emscher. The key component of the tower is the wind wheel, which has an effective output even when the wind is not particularly strong. Its many sails drive a spiral pump at the bottom of the tower, which raises water from the clarified water channel onto the tower. From here conduits carry the water along the high-level promenade to the bunker gardens. This provides water for the plants of the bunker gardens in dry periods. When this is not required, it flows through a collection basin back to the clarified water channel, plunging by way of a water spout from a great height into the Old Emscher - a conspicuously visible and audible feature. In the process the water is enriched with oxygen (see sketch).
