Clarified Water

The clarified water channel is situated in the central area of the Landscape Park. Some years ago the Old Emscher (on right) flowed here. It carried both waste water from households and industry and fresh rainwater and ground water. The smell could be quite unpleasant, especially on hot summer days.

Waste water still flows in the same place today - now however in a subterranean pipeline that runs parallel to the clarified water channel (see sketch).

The clarified water channel is an important element today in the water planning of the Landscape Park. In its straight course there is an alternation of deep and shallow zones. In a number of places there are steps enabling you to reach little terraces right next to or even in the water.
