Diving

Anybody who would like to dive away from it all should talk to Duisburg's underwater people. The old gasholder in the Park is a fascinating world for underwater sports. It takes pride in being Germany's most innovative diving center.

The blast-furnace gas the gasholder used to store has long been drained and all residue has been removed. The lower part of the vessel is filled with water and has been transformed into a divers' paradise.

With great commitment, the Park Diving Club has developed a training center. Following a fight of several years against deposits, corrosion and other problems, a gravel layer was first placed on the bottom of the tank. An artificial reef was created for practice dives. The wreck of a yacht, the "bones" of an old automobile and other "decorations" were sunk into the water. A true underwater scene unmatched by other basins now attracts divers from far afield.
