Not Quite Like the Rockies - Climbing in the Landscape Park

France has its Mount Blanc, the Rockies have Mount McKinley and the Park also has something to offer. It has a climbing garden in the ore bunkers. Its face is unique in the region, as the "iron men" of the German Mountaineering Association claim. They should know.

Since 1990, the Duisburg Group of the German Mountaineering Association has had its own climbing garden in the bunkers of the Park. They built the garden without flowers and added attractions on a number of occasions.

The climbing routes in the bunkers are the highlights, but the bunkers are also crossed by a rock-climbing walk.

The climbing garden is only open to members and guests of the Duisburg Group of the German Mountaineering Associations. Information is available from the office of the Association which is located in the Park.

The Rock-Climbing Walk - The German Mountaineering Association has created not only a climbing garden, but also a rock-climbing walk. The walk is a "mountain track" interrupted by easy climbing passages which features peaks, troughs, walls and bridges. The walk is secured by steel ropes and is provided with climbing aids such as ladders and rungs. Medium-term plans call for an extension of the walk from 150 m to 300 m.

Climbing Garden - The climbing garden was built in the blast-furnace bunkers. When the mill was still in operation, these bunkers were used to store coke and ore. The walls with their different slopes and the remaining towers are ideal for climbing and offer a great view of the country from their tops.
